# Owl Academy — Tome & Artifact Mastery System

## Overview

The Tome System is the core progression mechanic of Owl Academy. Knowledge is measured in **Tomes** — discrete units of mastered content — which crystallise into **Artifacts** upon collection. Artifacts are the keys to the sealed departments.

The full path comprises **145 Tomes** across ten departments, producing **11 Artifacts** and unlocking the **Consciousness Triad** (Departments VII, VIII, IX).

## The Artifact System

Nine tomes within a domain → 1 Artifact. Artifacts are the collectible proof of mastery.

Department X is the prerequisite master layer. Its structure mirrors the `4³ = 64` codon structure of biological DNA.

### Consciousness Triad — Departments VII, VIII, IX (Sealed)

These three departments are sealed until all 4 Substrate Artifacts from Department X are acquired. Each requires mastery of 27 tomes — a `3³` cubic lattice — crystallised into 3 Artifacts of 9 tomes each.

The number 27 (`3³`) is not arbitrary: the cubic self-similarity mirrors the recursive structure of conscious experience itself.

**145** is prime — by design. A prime total prevents any "shortcut" factoring of the curriculum. Every tome is required.

## XP & Progression Rules

1. A Tome must be **fully read and assessed** (quiz/sandbox completion) to award XP.
2. Manuscripts award **0 XP** until their `Active` publication date.
3. Reference documents award **0 XP** but may be required reading cited within active tomes.
4. Artifacts are awarded **automatically** when all tomes in their domain cluster are marked complete in Firestore.
5. The **Dept X prerequisite check** runs on login: if all 4 Substrate Artifacts are present in `user.artifacts`, Departments VII–IX unlock globally for that user.
6. XP carries over; there is no XP decay or expiry.
